Pediatric Palliative Medicine Residency Programs
University of Alberta
The University of Alberta offers flexible enhanced training in Pediatric Palliative Medicine for 6 months or 1 year duration, primarily based at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. The Stollery is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada. We are a quaternary care referral centre, managing the gamut of pediatric illnesses, including complex cardiac and multi-visceral transplants for Western Canada. Our training program is NOT accredited, and therefore, participants would not be eligible to write the Royal College Examination in Palliative Medicine, nor would the program confer eligibility for participants to qualify for Royal College certification in Pediatric Palliative Medicine. Our program is meant to provide supplementary knowledge and skills in Pediatric Palliative Medicine to enhance one’s practice where one would encounter children with life-limiting illnesses (e.g., PICU, NICU, general pediatrics, etc.). Specific rotations, including any electives at other institutions, are flexible to the learner’s specific practice needs and goals.
For more information, please contact the program director, Dr. Kyle Sue-Milne: ksue@ualberta.ca.
SickKids One-year Clinical Paediatric Palliative Care Certificate Program
This fellowship is ideal for individuals who are seeking focused experience in paediatric palliative care, and for whom a Royal College designation is not essential. The fellowship is focused on advancing the trainee’s knowledge of quality-of-life concerns, paediatric pain and symptom management, the provision of psychosocial support across the illness trajectory and end-of-life care.
The trainee will become familiar with comprehensive, interdisciplinary care, evaluation, and management of children with diverse advanced illnesses and their families, and will be responsible for the care of inpatients and outpatients in varied settings, including an academic teaching hospital, hospice, and home. Applicants must be board-eligible, or board certified in paediatrics or one of its sub-specialties and demonstrate a commitment to incorporating palliative care into practice. An elective experience with PACT is strongly recommended prior to applying. To apply: Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) | SickKids
